Comments and mentions from HN threads:
Ask HN: What three books impacted your career the most?
combatentropy: It encourages me to live in a way that's also good for others, especially when I'm feeling selfish and cynical, and it teaches me how to interact with them in a healthy way (e.g. the book of Proverbs).
Ask HN: What book impacted your life the most and how?
bjourne: Probably has impacted the society I live in more than any other book and society in turn has impacted me. It's well-worth reading for a lot of reasons.
Ask HN: What books fundamentally changed the way you think about the world?
narrator: I liked the bible because it dealt with fear a lot. Fear of the guy coming over the hill and slaughtering your whole tribe on a moment's notice. ...
dj168: It will not only change the way you think about the world, but also your entire life.

Ask HN: Books on specific topics that have applied to many areas of your life?
SlowBro: The Bible. Immensely useful in a variety of areas in daily life. Even secular readers praise its poetry and purpose. I prefer the English Standard Version. Readable yet accurate.
Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
emodendroket: If I'm being honest, I read a lot of books, but the only one I can think of really substantially changing my worldview was the Bible. Since you probably do not want to read the entire thing I am particularly a fan of Ecclesiastes, and maybe you could try some of the gospels if you still have steam after that.
JohnDoe_: ...it teaches a lot about love and faith in a higher being who is looking out for you. I suggest you start reading from the new testament because we can relate more with it. It changed my life.
Ask HN: What's one book that changed your life?
reitanqild: Obviously to anyone knowing me well enough I'm biased but I think parts could be of interest to some people here, esp. the proverbs. Personally I got a lot from it and I'd say it has helped me to stay alive, make friends, work smarter and generally don't waste my life.
Ask HN: What was the one book that you read and it actually changed your life?
RickJWagner: Even without the religious aspects, it's an incredible document. A lot of human nature is explained.
Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
putzdown: For a mind-blowing experience, read Matthew chapters 5–7, and have in mind that the topic is: “what it means for a person to be righteous, or good.” ...
p0d: I read through the bible every year and each time it shapes my thinking. For example, I was reading Exodus this morning about how we should care for the foreigner. I imagine several thousand years ago this was pretty radical. It also seems very relevant today.
Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
emodendroket: I read the Bible out of curiosity and ended up joining a church, so that's pretty consequential.
hellectronic: ...No it did and does not make me "religious" but gives me faith.
Ask HN: What are the books that changed the perspective of your life?
claar: No wait, don't go. I'm serious here. Read Proverbs -- from a purely atheistic mindset if you must. Very practical business and life advice if you're willing to hear it. ...
